Romania Celebrates a Milestone Moment as Visa-Free Travel to the United States Unlocks Endless Opportunities for Exploration, Connection, and Growth

Thursday, January 9, 2025

A new chapter is unfolding for Romania, as its citizens prepare to enjoy visa-free travel to the United States starting January 10, 2025. This monumental achievement will be officially marked in Washington, D.C., in a ceremony led by United States Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Romanian Ambassador Andrei Muraru.

For many Romanians, this announcement is more than just a policy change—it’s a gateway to endless possibilities. With Romania joining 42 other countries in the US Visa Waiver Program, citizens will now be able to visit the United States for tourism or business purposes without a visa, staying for up to 90 days.

The journey to this milestone has been years in the making. It required meeting the strict requirements of the Visa Waiver Program, including lowering the visa refusal rate to below 3 percent. In 2024 alone, Romanians submitted over 80,000 visa applications for business and tourism—nearly double the number from 2023. With more than 78,000 applications approved, it became clear that Romania was ready to take its place in the program.

This development is set to bring more than convenience. It will foster deeper connections between Romanians and Americans, whether through tourism, business ventures, or cultural exchanges. Families will find it easier to reunite, professionals can explore new career opportunities, and tourists can finally experience the wonders of the US without the red tape.

For many, the inclusion feels personal. Imagine the excitement of stepping onto Times Square, visiting the Grand Canyon, or attending a business meeting in Silicon Valley—all without the burden of securing a visa. It’s not just about travel; it’s about freedom, opportunity, and connection.

Beyond individual benefits, this step solidifies the growing partnership between Romania and the United States. Trade, investment, and educational collaborations are likely to thrive, as travel barriers fade and relationships strengthen. The ripple effects of this decision will be felt on both sides of the Atlantic.

For Romanians, January 10 will be a day of pride—a moment when years of effort culminate in a tangible result. It’s a day when borders feel a little smaller, and the world feels a lot closer. As one traveler put it, “It’s not just about the convenience; it’s about knowing we’re truly welcome.” This milestone isn’t just about visas—it’s about building bridges that connect dreams, ambitions, and lives.
